So the photo doesn't do the painting justice at all. the color is totally wonky and uneven. does anyone have suggestions about how to photograph artwork? lighting, angle, anything? well, anything except "get a better camera" :)

As suggested, try lighting from about 45 degree angle on either side and use enough of one kind of light to overcome whatever other light is present. That way you will only have one color tone to the light and white balance will be easier to get even across the image.

There are commercially available copystands that hold the lights and camera to help get even lighting. Check out the pictures and perhaps you can mimic this arrangement in some other way.
